After yesterday's events with the landlord, who spent a pretty significant amount of time here, with someone who I hadn't met previously, our landlord called him the plumber, and he may very well be, but.. He didn't have the resolution. The landlord and the plumber worked on our shower for some time (I feel like this is the start of a really bad, bad joke). After using the plunger, a lot. It seemed to be helping and the water seemed to be draining slightly better than before. Cool. They brought the Drain-o Gel, or whatever, poured the whole bottle down the drain and told us that we shouldn't shower for the rest of the day, that it worked best when it was entirely dry. It was suggested that I then boil water in the morning and pour it down the drain. Our pot is not that big. I boiled as much water as would fit into the pot and Moe helped me pour it down the drain. That water was backed up and it wasn't even that much.
Point being, it didn't drain easily.
I took a shower anyway, the water just didn't drain immediately. Sometimes a girl just needs a shower and that's exactly what happened with me. I just needed a freaking shower.
BEFORE 7:00 this morning someone was outside working on the washing machine. It was the plumber and someone else, but I don't know whether it was the guy who generally completes the maintenance problems or if he was working with the landlord, I don't know. But, they obviously did something because the washer seemingly worked. I was able to get the thing to turn on, and thought there might be a problem, but figured it was just in my head that it kept stopping.
It was not in my head only. The washer did keep stopping. :-/ And.. two hours after I put the load of laundry in, it still had not finished. I wasn't sure what to do. Both of our cell phones seem not to have money on them, and the manager and her boyfriend (who does maintenance) were not here. So, I just went on about my day. I met Moe on campus for lunch and to get eggs. Then Moe had to finish studying for the test that he took yesterday as they were offering the students who had problems, to retake it today.
Moe's exam froze in the middle of it, he couldn't do anything, except that the timer continued to go. Not good. The proctor told him to relax for a few minutes and after 15 minutes of just sitting there he finally got it together and called the proctor over to him again. It was then suggested that he restart.
Apparently this happened to several people and Moe was not alone, but this makes for an uncomfortable study environment for even the most studious of student, such as Moe. He's spending time on campus today, studying for the exam. I'm hopeful for him that he feels better about the exam environment at this point. Tomorrow begins the real work in term two. One of Moe's classmates, who's wife is a fellow SO, and I were talking today about term two, he said there shouldn't be any disorganization or bullshit the way that it happened in term one which is comforting to hear, honestly. I just hope that it happens to be true. No matter what, Moe and I have this. We jokingly say, "I got this, I got this," but in reality, I think we both feel that way, since we have the ticket booked and we are going home. Soon, too. Just five months away and we will be in the USA! At that time Moe will be a second year medical student and we will get to leave this island in less than a year from the time we get back.
I came home to find the landlord and the plumber, who has turned into the electrician, suspicious? a little, helping the landlord put up a light that will probably turn on when and if someone is to walk outside, a sensor light? Or, it might just be a light, who really knows. Anyway, they asked about the shower, I explained that it was still backed up. I also explained that I put the hot water as they instructed, but I think both of them were skeptical and thought that I didn't really do what was suggested of me, which is a little difficult to accept, but, whatever. I did do as they said, that's what really matters. I also explained to them that the washer was not working. I checked it and it was not doing anything. The plumber looked and said it was fine.
It was not fine. I have no idea what was happening with it, but it was not fine. They came into our apartment after a few minutes and looked in the shower and, I didn't know it, but apparently the freaking shower was overflowing! SERIOUSLY?! what the heck. It was all in the bathroom floor, and then it started leaking out a little bit too. The landlord cleaned it up, but dang, that's not really very comforting. He said that it was from the washer, but what I'm having a hard time understanding is why all of the sudden this happened? I mean, it was not like this previously. It would leak into the bathtub, but only about half way up (it's probably a four-five inch lip) and then it was fine.. I mean, it would drain by the time the next load did this? Now, all of the sudden it's leaked out? The landlord said no one else was home so it must be the washer? OK..
Then, the manager's boyfriend came over and said the manager's apartment is flooded, entirely. The whole apartment. I don't know how that's even really possible, and I didn't care to go look at it, but.. her boyfriend (who usually does maintenance issues) in this building said that someone was to come and clean out the pipes, but that the landlord didn't understand that.
What really happened, I'm sure, is that there was no communication, so problems like this happen. No one talks to us and we live here, so.. Why would anyone talk with the landlord, either? I don't even know what's happening with our damn laundry or what to do. Everyone else did laundry last week. I didn't because it was occupied, and it's necessary for it to get done. it's a problem. Seriously. I'm getting really overwhelmingly frustrated about this entire situation. No one communicates, we live here and there's been some kind of a problem every single day, sometimes more than one problem per day.
It's almost 6:00, the laundry that I put into the wash at around 8:00 this morning is still in the washer and it's still the same load, not as though I've been neglecting my laundry, or anything, it's just that.. It works for about 60 seconds (or less) and then stops working for 15-20 minutes and starts working again. WTF. This is unbelievable to me. I don't know how to deal with it. The landlord said, "does it usually take this long," and he seemed to be trying to fix it, but, I'm not so sure that he knows exactly.
I was told that someone is supposed to come to try to flush out the pipes.. But, I'm not sure when, because again, it's close to 6:00 and no one is here. It will be pretty dark if they come any later than this. It just feels like a whole lot of crap today, yesterday and the week previous.
Apparently the builder of this home is working in Miami now, no longer in Grenada and they are unsure how to get in touch with the builder. But, they are trying to see where exactly the pipes are instead of tearing up the concrete. He believes the problem is not specifically from our apartment but from the other apartments that it's connected to, maybe. Who knows, but this is pretty obnoxious.
I also haven't been able to sleep. I lie awake at night listening to the dog barking or Moe breathing while he sleeps.
I think I sound like a total creeper huh? But, anyway I'm just struggling to sleep lately. Waking up at the crack of dawn to someone banging on the washer hasn't helped. Poor Moe. I play games on my iPod, or get up and walk around our apartment. There's just not a lot to do, and we only have two rooms so there's not many places to go.
I hope I'm so exhausted that I will be able to sleep pretty well tonight though.
TIG TIG TIG!!!!!! Sorry, Girl. We, too, had one "maintenance" man who HAD A KEY TO OUR APARTMENT {why???} and was the fix all man. It took him like a week to fix our washer and one time he put in a whole new AC unit without asking annyone and our landlady was PISSED. Although we were very happy since the AC was clearly broken and a new one was definitely needed....AHHHH!
